PLAZAMEDIA makes XR broadcast-ready and launches new Extended Reality (XR) LED Studio at media capital Munich

For the realization of the innovative extended reality environment, PLAZAMEDIA has entered into partnerships with Mo-Sys Engineering Ltd. from London and Alfalite Spain.

Jens Friedrichs, Chairman of the Management Board of PLAZAMEDIA GmbH: “From now on, we will be offering companies from a wide range of industries an almost limitless choice of implementation options at the media capital Munich to stage their brands in the best possible way.”

Amsterdam | Ismaning, September 9, 2022 – PLAZAMEDIA announced the launch of its new Extended Reality (XR) LED Studio at the leading international trade fair IBC (International Broadcast Convention), which started today in Amsterdam: From November 2022, the new XR LED Studio will be available at PLAZAMEDIA’s headquarters in the AGROB Medienpark in Ismaning near Munich, offering a wide range of possibilities for innovative and sustainably realized productions.

Sustainable next-level productions for emotional storytelling

With XR technology, PLAZAMEDIA offers media and production companies as well as advertisers the chance to stage their brands in an innovative and resource-friendly way. From broadcast/TV and film to corporate productions such as commercials or photo shoots, on-site, hybrid and virtual events as well as presentations and training courses, the novel XR LED Studio offers almost unlimited possibilities to create new worlds with the flexible production options and to individually design the respective brand presence.

PLAZAMEDIA chooses Mo-Sys and Alfalite as cooperation partners

To realize the live multi-camera functionality, PLAZAMEDIA decided to use Mo-Sys’ new broadcast Mixed Reality system (bMR). The broadcast Mixed Reality system (bMR) is a toolbox specially designed for XR on-set realtime production based on the Unreal Engine, which has been enhanced and speed-optimized by Mo-Sys with many XR-specific functions. The “Startracker” camera tracking systems, also developed by Mo-Sys and used at PLAZAMEDIA, are seamlessly integrated into bMR and, together with the new bMR multi-camera solution, allow an almost unlimited number of live cameras to be used in the XR Studio.

For the LED walls, PLAZAMEDIA has chosen Alfalite Spain as its cooperation partner – a manufacturer that has specialized in the use of LED walls in TV studios for many years. The high-quality LED wall used at PLAZAMEDIA has a size of 6 x 20m and was especially developed for recordings with digital film and TV cameras. In addition to an extremely high image quality, the LED wall is characterized by mechanical precision and a viewing angle of 175 degrees H/V without visible light fall-off. With a pixel pitch of 1.9mm, a resolution is achieved that is important for broadcast applications and higher than usual XR volumes for film productions. In terms of processing and network infrastructure, the infrastructure is optimized for fail-safety with main/backup systems to optimally meet the requirements of elaborate live productions. The LED wall is complemented by flexible “Wild Walls” with likewise high-resolution Alfalite LED panels for the production of photorealistic reflections and lighting effects.

Philippe Vignal, Director of Sales and Business Development, EMEA & APAC, of Mo-Sys Engineering Ltd: “PLAZAMEDIA are pioneering new virtual production workflows for live broadcast sports content using the very latest in LED / XR technologies. Mo-Sys is incredibly proud to have supplied and managed this project, and to have also been able to provide hands-on practical VP training though the Academy to support the successful delivery. It reflects our commitment to virtual production innovation, and our pioneering spirit in seeking smarter and more efficient tools for virtual production creatives.”

Jesús Cabrera, CEO of Alfalite: “It is a great satisfaction for us to be part of the technological partners of a client as prestigious as PLAZAMEDIA and provide him with our best Alfalite LED Wall panel and continue improving our technology together with Mo-Sys and PLAZAMEDIA thanks to their experience in XR broadcast environments. It was very easy to work with PLAZAMEDIA team in the design and engineering of Alfalite VP XR solution due to their technical and human quality.”

Jens Friedrichs,Chairman of the Management Board of PLAZAMEDIA GmbH: “With our new XR Stage, we are the first provider in Germany to focus on the specific requirements of broadcast productions and have adapted our concept specifically for this purpose. From now on, we will be offering companies from a wide range of industries an almost limitless choice of implementation options at the media capital Munich to stage their brands in the best possible way – whether film and TV productions, advertising campaigns or impressive B2B and B2C events. I am delighted that the project team led by Hansjörg Baumgartner, Michael Ermair and Maximilian Gillich is now bringing the XR Stage product to life together with our partners Mo-Sys and Alfalite after a long evaluation phase and thus expanding our product portfolio in a future-proof manner.”
