Triumph at the German Television Award: Production of the FIBA Basketball World Cup for MagentaTV wins ”Best Sports Program” award

Cologne | Ismaning, September 25, 2024 – Strong team performance at the Basketball World Cup leads to major triumph: The production of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup for Deutsche Telekom’s MagentaTV, with the sensational German World Cup victory as the crowning glory, was named “Best Sports Program” at the 2024 German Television Award ceremony in Cologne tonight. The German Television Award honors outstanding productions in fiction, entertainment, and information in up to 30 categories that were released between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024. In a team with Magenta TV/Telekom Deutschland and thinXpool TV, PLAZAMEDIA provided extensive technical production services for the Basketball World Cup. Together with PLAZAMEDIA as the technical service provider, Telekom staged the tournament, which was held in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia from August 25 to September 10, 2023, with 92 live games on three channels for an audience of millions. The sporting success of the DBB team took basketball to a new level: At its peak, 2.8 million people watched the semi-final between Germany and the USA on MagentaSport, and over 10 million watched the World Cup in total – with profound and emotional coverage from the on-air team of experts Per Günther and Ireti Amojo, presenters Benni Zander and Jan Lüdeke and commentators Michael Körner and Basti Ulrich.

Presentation of the German Television Award in the category ”Best Sports Program”

The German Television Award ceremony took place at a grand gala in the MMC Studios in Cologne. The other finalists in the “Best Sports Program” category included public broadcasters ARD / ZDF / NDR with the Handball European Championships 2024 and ZDF with the UEFA EURO 2024.

Arnim Butzen, Head of TV at Telekom: “This is a great confirmation of the high quality standards that we all pursue together. At MagentaSport, we focused on basketball early on and it is a great confirmation for all parties when the sport, its protagonists and the content implementation complement each other at a world-class level. Excitement, entertainment, sports and TV implementation at the highest level – that moved the whole of Germany. We would like to thank the jury for recognizing our commitment to turning great sports into an equally great media experience. We would also like to thank all the protagonists and teams involved who have contributed to this. Sports on MagentaTV and MagentaSport sets standards – both nationally and internationally.”

Jens Friedrichs, Chairman of the Management Board of PLAZAMEDIA GmbH: “The German Television Award belongs first and foremost to the entire team with so many dedicated colleagues who staged the Basketball World Cup for MagentaTV in such an elaborate and impressive way. The positive reactions from the public and the media after this highlight – crowned by the sensational World Cup triumph of our national basketball team – have already made it particularly clear: This production created real added value for viewers – including a fairytale ending for German basketball! The award is a well-deserved tribute to the great team effort of all partners and service providers involved.”
